If you pay MPs more, do you get better governance?

An infographic asking if larger MP salaries means better governance. The answer: probably not.

We took the best data we could find on international MP remuneration and compared it to the average person in that country.  Then we came up with a “Good Governance Metric” using a few different indexes measuring democracy, transparency, corruption, etc and see if there was any correlation.

The graphic got picked up by Good Magazine, Fast Company and Design Observer among others and got more than 10,000 hits in a couple of days.  We got about thousand press requests too.

We should say again that this was an exercise to see what stuff we could quickly get.  There are quite a few problems with the data — the salary figure is just that and doesn’t include the sometimes massive benefits parliamentarians are often entitled to and more — enough for us to say this isn’t really robust enough to make huge conclusions on.  At least not as a single source.  Anyone who wants to work on something like this with us, drop an email, we are in.
